In fr\u00fchmittelalterlicher Zeit bildete sich rund um den Lohner Esch, dessen Ackerflur sich \u00fcber eine L\u00e4nge von rund\u00a0sechs Kilometern und einer Breite von 500 bis 1000 Metern zwischen den Flussl\u00e4ufen der Schlinge und Berkel erstreckt, ein Ring von Bauernh\u00f6fen, der das Landschaftsbild noch heute bestimmt.<\/p>\n<p>Ausgangspunkt f\u00fcr die Entstehung d\u00f6rflicher Siedlungen waren die Haupth\u00f6fe Lohn im Norden und Schulze Pr\u00f6bsting im S\u00fcden. In der N\u00e4he des Hofes zu Lohn entstand um 800 nach Christus mit St. Otger eine der \u00e4ltesten Pfarrkirchen des Bistums M\u00fcnster. Auf dem Grund und Boden des Hofes Schulze Pr\u00f6bsting bestand schon im 12. Jahrhundert innerhalb dieses Urkirchspiels eine Kapelle. Im Jahre 1231 erhob Bischof Ludolf von M\u00fcnster (1226 &#8211; 1247) die Vitus-Kapelle zur Pfarrkirche und wies ihr den als S\u00fcdlohn bezeichneten s\u00fcdwestlichen Teil der Mutterpfarre mit den Bauerschaften Eschlohn und Nichtern als Kirchspiel zu. Die Niederlassung von Kleinbauern, H\u00e4ndlern und Handwerkern im Umfeld der Kirche f\u00fchrte zur Bildung des Dorfes S\u00fcdlohn.<\/p>\n<p>Gro\u00dfe Bedeutung f\u00fcr die Entwicklung des Dorfes hatte der spanisch-niederl\u00e4ndische Krieg (1568-1648), in dessen Verlauf es immer wieder zu Pl\u00fcnderungen des westm\u00fcnsterl\u00e4ndischen Grenzraumes kam. Um sich zu sch\u00fctzen, errichteten die S\u00fcdlohner im Jahre 1597 mit Genehmigung des F\u00fcrstbischofs von M\u00fcnster eine aus Wall und Graben bestehende Befestigungsanlage und erhielten zu deren Unterhalt im Jahre 1617 die Marktrechte. Zwei B\u00fcrgermeister standen an der Spitze der Verwaltung. Die arme Bev\u00f6lkerung hatte uns\u00e4glich zu leiden. Auch im 30-j\u00e4hrigen Krieg von 1618 bis 1648 ging es den Bewohnern nicht viel besser. Graf Anholt und der Feldmarschall Tilly schlugen am 6. August 1623 mit ihren Truppen den &#8222;tollen&#8220; Christian in der &#8222;Schlacht im Lohner Brook&#8220; bei Stadtlohn. Auf seiner Flucht in die Niederlande durchquerte Christian von Braunschweig auch S\u00fcdlohn. Die Franzosen verlangten beste Bewirtung. Durch die Zollgrenze nach Holland war der Warenaustausch unterbunden. Es entwickelte sich ein ausgedehnter Schleichhandel \u2013 \u201eSchmuggel\u201c war unausweichlich.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Im Dezember 1810 vereinigte Napoleon das F\u00fcrstentum Salm mit dem Kaiserreich Frankreich. Die Weimarer Republik brachte die \u201eGoldenen Zwanziger Jahre\u201c hervor. Die Weltwirtschaftskrise ab Ende 1929 m\u00fcndete ab 1930 in den Aufstieg der Nationalsozialisten und in die furchtbaren Ereignisse des weltumfassenden Zweiten Weltkrieges von 1939 bis 1945 mit ca. 55 Millionen Kriegstoten. W\u00e4hrend des ersten Weltkrieges blieb die Zivilbev\u00f6lkerung von den Kampfhandlungen weitgehend verschont.<\/p>\n<p>Der Zweite Weltkrieg brachte der Zivilbev\u00f6lkerung unendliche Not durch Luftangriffe, Vertreibung, Hunger und Entbehrungen. Auch S\u00fcdlohn blieb nicht verschont. Besonders in den letzten Kriegstagen wurde S\u00fcdlohn am 22. M\u00e4rz 1945 in 3 Bombenangriffen furchtbarster Art zerst\u00f6rt. 72 Menschen starben. Ungleich mehr fanden den Tod auf den Schlachtfeldern. 246 B\u00fcrger aus S\u00fcdlohn und Oeding fielen bzw. wurden vermisst.
